What Does Papamochani Ekadashi Means?
The Ekadashi occurs during the Chaitra month’s Krishna Paksha (waning phase), known as Papmochani Ekadashi. Two Ekadashis occur each month, for twenty-four throughout the year. As the final of the Hindu solar calendar’s twenty-four Ekadashis, Papmochani Ekadashi occurs between Holika Dahan and Chaitra Navratri.
The North Indian Purnimanta calendar marks Papmochani Ekadashi in the Krishna Paksha of the Chaitra month, whereas the South Indian Amavasyanta calendar marks it in the Phalguna month. Even yet, it coincides with the same day on both calendars. Papmochani Ekadashi happens before Ugadi and is the last Ekadashi of the year. It occurs in March or April on the Gregorian calendar.

History Behind Papamochani Ekadashi :
In the Bhavishyottara Purana, Lord Krishna and King Yudhishthira discuss the history of Papmochani Ekadashi. An avid follower of Shiva, the Sage Medhavi was devoted to the god in every aspect of his life. In the Chaitraratha forest, he used to meditate rigorously. Lord Indra and his apsaras frequented the flowering Chaitraratha forest because it was their favorite area. Indra paid a visit to see Medhavi and his remorse at one point. Indra considered trying to pull Medhavi’s attention away from his meditation out of concern that he would be promoted to a higher position and given a more prominent place in heaven.
To keep Medhavi from focusing on his meditation, Indra dispatched the apsara Manjughosa. Despite Manjughosa’s best efforts, Medhavi remained unmoved by his attempts at seduction. This was in large part owing to Medhavi’s impressive level of sobriety. As time went by, Manjughosa continued to sing from a distance of several kilometers. Lord Kamdev was so awed by her voice that he summoned his mystical bows to aid her. As a result, Manjughosa began his seductive singing, and Kamdev, using his powerful and magical bows, was able to attract Medhavi’s attention to Manughosha.
Medhavi snapped out of his trance. He fell prey to Manjughosa’s allure and let his guard down. They tied the knot and started a family. Manjughosa eventually stopped caring about Medhavi after a long period. They broke up after she begged to be released from their relationship. To Medhavi’s dismay, it became clear that he had been tricked at this time. He was so angry that he wished Manjughosa would turn into a hideous witch. Following this, Medhavi went to see his father, Sage Chyavana, who instructed him to fast on Papmochani Ekadashi to be forgiven. After this, Medhavi dedicated himself to Lord Vishnu and was cleansed of his sins by observing the Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat. Manjughosha, who had long since lost her allure, observed the Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat. Because of her repentance, her sins were forgiven.
